Los Angeles City Controller Ron Galperin

Financial Fitness

Everywhere I go, I hear from people who want to get their finances in order -- but aren't quite surehow. And it's clear to me that if we want to achieve a financially fit City -- it's vital that our residents be financially fit. That's why I've been hosting a series of workshops in different neighborhoods to provide Angelenos with practical advice on budgeting, saving, investing and more. Our most recent workshop was last weekend at the Lincoln Heights Youth Complex Center -- where we partnered with the Financially Fit Foundation, Transamerica Financial Advisors, the office of Councilmember Gil Cedillo and the Barrio Action Youth & Family Center to help local residents stretch and tone their financial muscles.

At the L.A. Controller's Office, good isn't good enough -- what we strive for is excellence. I'm incredibly proud of the hard-working professionals in my office who have earned us a prestigious Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting. This award from the Government Finance Officers Association recognizes government financial reports that are easy to read and efficiently organized. Check out our annual report -- and a nifty interactive site -- to learn more about how our City works and how your money gets spent.

A Smarter Way of Doing Business

VSS_2.png

You name it; we buy it. L.A. does business with thousands of vendors for a host of goods and services. To cut through the bureaucracy and make it easier for the City and for the businesses that work with us, we just launched an online Vendor Self Service portal. Now, our vendors and prospective vendors have easy access to account information, contracts, payments, and invoices. My goal is to save the City money, get the best value for every dollar we spend, and attract more local entrepreneurs and companies to do business with the City. Take Control with ControlPanel.LA

LakeBalboa.JPG

Last week, I went to Lake Balboa to show to the local neighborhood council the wealth of information and data we make available to the public on ControlPanel.LA. As part of my role as the City's watchdog, I created this resource to put information on the City's finances, government services and much more at the tip of your fingers. It's your money and you should know how your City is spending it. Did you know you can request a demonstration at your neighborhood council or community organization? Email ctr.scheduling@lacity.org for more information.
