We Can't Let Disaster Break Our Technology Backbone

When disaster strikes, we need our City to be prepared and firing on all cylinders. But without access to information technology (IT), essential City functions like emergency dispatching and financial management would grind to a halt.

Recently, I set out to learn how we can protect our most important IT during and after an earthquake, terrorist attack or other disaster. My audit found that L.A. needs to take a Citywide approach to ensuring that our information systems can bounce back from a disaster, and invest in upgrading key IT infrastructure right away. To protect our residents and the local economy tomorrow, we must prepare today.

Thinking Creatively About Our Housing Shortage

L.A. needs to think constructively, compassionately and creatively about how we solve our housing crisis and make homes affordable to all who need them. I spoke at the Housing California’s Families 2017 conference about what state and local governments can do to encourage development at all price points.

Our housing crisis is fundamentally an imbalance of supply and demand. The government has a proper role to play, but sometimes, we should get out of the way.
