City Controller Called for Stronger Oversight after Aliso Canyon Leak

Los Angeles – The Los Angeles City Council today adopted several of the recommendations in an audit of the City’s franchise agreement with Southern California Gas Company (SoCalGas) that will strengthen municipal oversight of the utility’s operations while bringing more revenue to the City. The recommendations were outlined in a September 2016 audit by Controller Ron Galperin's office following a massive gas leak at the Aliso Canyon oil field in the northern San Fernando Valley.

The report highlighted modest increases in City revenues that aren't keeping up with increases in City spending -- and the need to exercise caution in new spending both for the current fiscal year and for the Mayor's soon-to-be proposed budget for 2017-18.

Los Angeles – City Controller Ron Galperin released an audit today entitled ‘Income-Restricted Affordable Housing Units in Los Angeles: A Review of the City’s Density Bonus Incentives and Overall Oversight’.The review found density bonus incentives have had minimal impact in incentivizing private developers to include affordable housing in their projects. The audit also highlights the lack of adequate  tools to ensure income-restricted units are best going only to those who qualify.

Instead urges cuts to punitive tickets and overhead costs with new technologies and better signage

Los Angeles  — Controller Ron Galperin unveiled a new parking website that explains LA’s parking ticket program. The online report shows the City generated close to $148 million in gross ticket revenues in the last year -- but some ¾ of ticket revenue went to overhead, salaries and administrative costs. The remaining $41 million was transferred to the City’s General Fund to help pay for City services such as police and fire.

Los Angeles – They came. They coded. They competed. And when it was over, one of them won a job at City Hall.

In what many are saying is a first for the City of Los Angeles, Controller Ron Galperin awarded a six-month paid fellowship in his office to Mike Ludwig, who won the City’s first-ever “Iron Viz” competition.
